| Pets in A recent report by Stockholm international water institute the food and agricultural management institute estimates that in the US as much as 30 percent of the food prepared worth more than 48 .3 billion is thrown away each year….!!!! The report adds that wasted food implies wasted water, that’s enough water to meet the household needs of 500 million people…..!! Even as thousands of millions go hungry across the planet many overeat. The report points out that …we are providing food to take care of not only our necessary food consumption but also our wasteful habits…!! We are fast catching up with the west with our wasteful habits too although there are chikkanam chinnusamys who keep a check with the waste. While our thoughts are on economics and perhaps when we have more than enough ….some already have with their high income from MNCs…..we shall also waste and let the world go to waste or to war on food and fuel….!! In 2001 the company did a detailed analysis of food waste in cafeterias. The tally 8.5 gms of waste per person per day. That seemed excessive so it began sensitizing employees by setting up a procedure for them to scrape their leftovers into bins when they finished their meal. The company measured waste weekly and published updates. ``when you publish the numbers you make people conscious maybe tomorrow they wont take such a big helping ‘’ says hedge. The tactic worked and the tally came down to 4.5 gms A lot is said about their water recycling rainwater harvesting water management too… Two different bits from articles wide ….wide apart. Suggest we sit up and take notice of what we waste too lest we end up in the middle of water or waste or food wars. Or if we don’t end up and are lucky enough our children might be at the receiving end or grand children as in India we still have a little bit of awareness left. All the same as it is elsewhere it is not your fundamental right to waste….!! Take a smaller helping of food next time rather than throw something out in the dustbin and perhaps in the long run we may save a few going hungry elsewhere…where three idli/dosa can do why go for five? sathya |

| Hullo By coincidence i read this during world environmant day time. Very true , we dont give thought to what all wasteful things we do. We must keep eyes open always and try to save, reuse, recycle. And must teach kids too. Nice article.

| Hi Satya, Good topic on waste management. Let us not restrict to just over loading or under loading our plates...but over years of practice we should also be able to make the right quantity of food on daily basis...when we have guests its an exception. At my place the sad part is my maid...she works at 3 places...but most of the time we keep aside food for her and she forgets to take it and by the time we realise...it has gone stale or not worth keeping for another 24 hrs. She is always short of money...but no seriousness about taking things with her that we keep aside and it isin't that we give her stale food...its fresh food that we have made that day. They also waste a lot of water while doing the utensils and clothes. |
