Default Tear Jerker with a difference!

Tear Jerker with a difference!
I love watching the idiot box whenever I find time. For that matter I am not the one who is glued to the TV most of the time. My favourite programmes are the music contests in various channels that bring out the skills of the various age groups from 5 to 40 or even more. I am simply amazed at the talents displayed by the amatuer artists who could have performed as good as any famous play back singers had they got the opportunity and luck! I also love to watch the quiz programmes that again challenge the intellect or our knowledge. Patti Manrams are my favourite too. Sports and games is not my cup of tea! When my kids were young I never watched TV for the simple reason that I had to give time for their education and more over I did not want them to become couch potatoes. Ofcourse it is a different matter that even computers can make them so which I realised a little late! By the time the damage was done! OH! Oh! I have meandered away from my main subject! Now coming back to the idiot box, after my kids grew up I had much time for myself and thus started surfing the 50 or so channels available in those days. That is how I started watching the tear jerking serials! One advantage of watching them was that, even if we missed out for a whole month, we could catch up with the story easily! That is the pace at which our directors and producers move the story line! Luckily for me, since I am not the type that could be made to cry easily by the stupid l, dramatic display of emotions, not many serials have appealed to me. But I would be doing an injustice if I did not write about the current serial I am watching on Jaya TV at 8.30 pm from Monday to Friday. I am sure people watching this channel would have got the name by now! Yes, it is ‘Simran Thirai’! Sure, it is a tear jerker with a difference. It is not in the category of mega serials.

That was one of the reasons I started watching it. A story a month is the speciality of this serial. One story has ended, which was a homage and tribute to Sujatha the famous writer who is no more with us. All the stories coming up seem to be women oriented but again with a difference. Unlike other serials that depict scheming dils and mils showing their one upmanship and violence that would out beat the movies in a few years and the bedroom scenes entering right into our drawing rooms,’Simran Thirai belongs to an entirely different category (at least till now). The famous actress Simran is playing the lead role in all the serials while the other characters change from story to story. The first story was about how a woman tackles her marriage when she learns that she has been cheated by her husband and his people. The way Simran has acted is amazing! No melo-drama, no unwanted display of emotions, very subtle expressions on the face! I could just say VOW! Not only Simran, all the other actors also played their roles well. Ofcourse that credit should be given to Sripriya, the director of that story. Coming to the second story that is being currently screened-‘Anuvum Naanum’, it is a story of how Simran tackles her relationship with her step daughter who must be about 8 or 9 years of age. Excellent performance by all the actors! I want to elaborate on the scenes that I loved most and got carried away by emotions.
When Simran’s hubby’s first wife’s sister swaps her sister’s photo for the present couple’s photo and Simran’s hubby yells out at her(since his daughter is very much disturbed by this act) and asks her to get out of the house, how wonderfully Simran reacts immediately and how she changes after she becomes composed at her landlady’s house! That really shows what a class actor Simran is! Next, when the step daughter locks herself in her bed room and refuses to come out when Simran calls for her, pleads with her and ultimately loses her temper. It seems so realistic! Then Simran’s hubby is narrating his life with his first wife to Simran.

He says, “Some times, her love has ‘irritated’ me though I wouldn’t say it created a hatred for her”. One night when he comes home late, his first wife is angry with him and she throws away all the food. With a wicked smile she says that because he was late, she wanted to punish him. The poor hubby goes to bed drinking water even though he was famished. We may all say, such softness at a time when he has been provoked beyond tolerable limits, how can any one keep his cool? It is so unrealistic! Yes, it is unrealistic. But I will come to this part again later.
Next, his wife wakes him up at the middle of the night at 1 AM to say that she has cooked all over again! Now he loses his temper and shouts at her- “Is this the time to wake me up at this unearthly hour to serve me food?” But he walks to the dining table to have his food! Both his softness and anger have come out in right proportions!
Now, coming to the real part of my purpose for writing this piece-Some times they seem very unrealistic to be true but it is not impossible for us to make these happen. If only people learn to be a little more patient, a little more loving and a little more understanding how beautiful this world would become! Compared to the routine soaps this one seems to have set a new precedent. If only people get the message!
Yes, ‘Simran Thirai’ is a tear jerker with a difference. It brings tears not out of sympathy for a dil, mil, husband or fil but because of the human touch in every frame and slide. I do wish that more and more such serials are produced and even the movie makers go back to the golden days of Cinema when human values were given more importance.
Regards,
Malathi

Dear Vaidehi,
The second story came to an end yesterday. Coming monday, a new story will be commencing. I am sure it would be good too. I am also not a person who watches TV continuously! But this one is really too good! That was the reason I wanted to share it with others so that they could watch it and learn something nice out of it.
Regards,
Malathi
