| The news of swapping of babies in a Govt Hospital at Chennai and the fight to own the male child between the two parents is prominently appearing in front page of Newspapers for the last few days. Now they are waiting for the result of DNA test result as for court order. This same incident had happened in our family quite a long time back. It happened in the year 1941. My eldest sister had all her five deliveries at Rainy Hospital, Tondaiarpet. This happened when she had her third delivery. She delivered a male child. The swapping of babies took place after three or four days. The nurse who took the babies for bath interchanged the babies unknowingly. Though my sister had protested for giving some one else's baby to her, the nurse did not admit her mistake, just left the baby with my sister and went off. Of course both babies were male. Yet no one can accept some one's baby as theirs..But the other lady was keeping quiet. When my mother went to the hospital in the afternoon she saw my sister weeping and with a swollen face. When she asked her what had happened she told that the nurse had given her some one's baby and when she told her she did not listen to her and had just left the baby with her. Even when my mother went and spoke to the nurse she was adamant and just said that she gave only my sister's baby to her. Then my mother sent word to my b-i-l and he came to the hospital. He was a prominent lawyer and was not even afraid of the European judges. He straight went to the matron's office who was an English lady and told her about the matter and asked her to settle the matter. She at once went and saw the baby and to her utter dismay, she found it was not my sister's baby. My sister's baby was a healthy one and weighed 8 lbs on birth and it was the only baby born in that hospital weighing so much. She immediately called the erred nurse and shouted at her to bring my sister's baby from the other woman. Those days DNA test was not conducted. Yet because of the extra-ordinary weight of the baby it was restored to my sister. Later both mothers met again in Varadarajar Temple and exchanged pleasantries and also made enquiries about each other's child. The swapped child later became an IAS officer. All is well that ends well!

| Dear Puni, Thanks for peeping in. Though the incident took place long time back when the medical world was not advanced as of today, my sister got back her baby. Love, PS

| Dear Pushpaji, It was really sad to hear about the few hours of dilemma your sister went through and immediately after delivery it must have been so mentally strenous on her. I believe those days things would have been very different. It ws good that your BIL stood up and decided to fight for his child rather than take things lying down which generally happened during the British Raaj when people were skeptical about approaching the Britishers with their views lest they are met with indifference, But God Bess this British matron for her help . And I am glad to know this infact has become an IAS officer. Love, Devika

| Dear Devika, Thank you for visiting the thread and showing your concern over the incident. So many incidents occurred in our life stranger than fiction, out of those I had shared some with Ilites. Though there were lots of trials and tribulations God's benevolence saved us each time. Love, PS
