| Rahu kalam and bharani karthigai: How many of us have followed this all our life, we have packed things way ahead and cancelled trips if it is bharani and karthigai nakshatram. Many have probed, you mean the railways take holidays on these days, no! Then why the hell are these entire still in force. Why pack the stuff the previous night and leave it in the neighborhood we spend time there before we venture ahead, and have a satisfaction of beating rahu to his game. Monday morning have always had blues from people who have to leave by the 8 to 9 period but leave home before 7am 7.30 to 9 rahu kalam so that to avoid and sometime heard bankers going ahead with a mock transaction to avoid this time, and even the people traveling in their car start much earlier or lay back their time to suit the better after math and so on. While leaving the house the other things are a wooden log laden vehicle or carrier, a widow, two shudras one brahmana and so on, we turn back inward to start all over again. Is it superstitious? No! Many a time I have seen the avoidable delays and many a time shops closed or we have forgotten the keys to the house left it at friends place only to travel all the way around the city and get back, I would not say it fatal but something not happening smooth, so they avoid it at any cost, even the attainment of puberty by a woman is predicted with various happenings, like if it is a Sunday, she may suffer the entire life, and some auspicious days are also mentioned for the good and mangalam they say. sunkan

| Sunkan, I do not see Rahukalam for routine jobs, but for the special ones. My DH does not believe in Rahukalam. He also advices me often not to follow. One day, when we were shopping, I came across a very beautiful 'ladies' watch. My DH wanted to buy that for me. I told him we could buy it later cos it's rahukalam. My DH forced me and we bought it. After fifteen days, while I was going on a scooter with my husband, the watch fell down and got smashed by a car ( in front of our eyes). I felt very bad. My DH said it was a coincidence. But I do not want to take a risk. So I do follow for special occassions. My dad follows rahukalam and I got it from him. Sindhu

| I do follow Raghukaalam on and off and i don't want to be guilty after that. Here on Monday the school starts at 8 and how can i tell them not to get ready at 7.30--it is not possible like wise many instances where we cannot follow those beliefs. During those times i tell myself everyday and every minute is God's gift to us and go on as usual. But when necessary i do follow my own belief, don't want to impose on others. sriniketan |
