He was a wide-ranging celebrity of the South Indian Cinema who was called as the 'actor saint' was well liked as an avid performer, refined music composer, incomparable musician, vocalist, filmmaker and director.


ఆయనను తెలుగు మరియు తమిళు సినీరంగాలు చాల గౌరవంతో చూసేది, సన్మానాలు కూడా చేసాయి. ఇలా రెండు భాషులవారి చే గౌరవింపబడిన వ్యక్తీ వీరొక్కరే. నాగయ్యగారు చాల సరళజీవి, సహృదయులు, పైగా సుసంస్క్రుతులు.


His life personified like an ocean current, which sprang up out of the blue and fell down instantly.

నాగయ్యగారు ౧౯౦౪ మార్చ్ ౨౪ వ తేది గుంటూర్ లో ఉన్నా రేపల్లెలో ఒక తెలుగు బ్రాహ్మణ కుటుంబంలో జన్మించారు. తల్లి శ్రీమతి వెంకటలక్ష్మాంబ, తండ్రి శ్రీ రామలింగ శర్మగారు.

అది భారత స్వాతంత్ర్య సమర సమయం. మన నాగయ్యగారు మహాత్మ గాంధి, నెహరు మరి ఇంక కొందరు పెద్దవాళ్ళ నుంచి స్ఫూర్తి పొందారు. సి దురైస్వామి అయ్యంగార్ మరియు మదభుషి అనంతశయనం అయ్యంగార్ వారి శిష్యునిగా చేరి కాంగ్రెస్ అధివేశనాలలో పాల్గొన్నారు.

With his flair for music and theatre he took part in amateur theatre associating himself with the political leader R. B. Ramakrishna Raju, a successful lawyer and interested in theatre. (Later Raju became the Chairman of the Madras Legislative Council during late 1940’s.)

Naagiah even assisted the gramophone companies like Hutchins, Twin etc., as the domesticated musician. He brought down many assorted gramophone records just as Classical and light music and some of them were of the great legendary saint and musician, Thyagaraja Swami. Even at that period he brought in some tryouts to bring in the English wordses like 'My lovely lalanaa', 'I love you heart of hearts, sweet heart' and such in Telugu songs.

ఇప్పటికి నాలుగైదు రోజులుగా సప్తగిరి టీవీ ఛానల్ లో బి ఎన్ రెడ్డి దర్శకత్వంలో చిత్తూర్ నాగయ్య గారు నటించిన చిత్రాలు చూపిస్తున్నారు. రాత్రి ౧౨ కి ఒక సారి మరియు అదే చిత్రాని మరుసటి దినం ఉదయం ౧౧ ఘంటలకు చూపిస్తారు. ఇష్టం ఉన్నవాళ్ళు చూడవచ్చు.

నాగయ్యగారి గురించి continue చేద్దామా ? ...
సుబ్రహ్మణ్య అయ్యర్, జి ఎన్ బాలసుబ్రహ్మణ్యం లాంటి దిగ్గజుల శిష్యులై సంగీతం నేర్చుకున్నారు. మరి అప్పటి గొప్ప విద్వాంసులందరిని (దాదాపు) కలిసారు. వారిలో చాల అద్భుతంగా సంగీతం పాడిన ఒక ౧౧ యేళ్ళ అమ్మాయిని కలిసారు.. అదెవరో కాదు. ఎం ఎస్ సుబ్బులక్ష్మి.
తర్వాత గౌహాతి లో కాంగ్రెస్ అధివేషణం అయిన తర్వాత మోతిలాల్ నెహ్రూ వారి ఆనంద భవనంలో ఉండి అక్కడ సమావేశం లో పాల్గొన్నారు. కమల నెహ్రూ ను మరియు చాల శ్రద్ధగా వింటున్న బాలిక ఇందిరాగాంధీ ని కూడా కలిసారు.

నాగయ్యగారు చిత్తూర్ రామవిలాస సభ అనే సాంస్కృతిక సంఘం ద్వారా చాల ప్రదర్శనాలు ఇచ్చారు.
సారంగధర, బృహన్నల, రామదాసు మొదలైన పాత్రలు ధరించారు. అయన చేసిన చిత్రాంగద అనే స్త్రీ పాత్ర పోషణ సారంగధరలో ఎంత అద్భుతంగా ఉన్నిందంటే ఆయనకు స్వర్ణ పదకం లభించింది. ఇదే సమయములో విజయలక్ష్మి గారితో పెళ్లి జరగింది. ఆమె ఒక ఆడ పిల్లను కానీ చనిపోయింది. తను గిరిజ అనే అమ్మాయిని పెళ్ళాడారు పాపకోసం. కాని ఆ పాప కూడా చాల రోజులు బ్రతుకలేదు. గిరిజ కూడా చనిపోయింది. ఇలా ఎన్నో దుఃఖాలు అనుభవించిన నాగయ్య గారికి బ్రతుకు మీద నీరసం పుట్టి కొన్ని రోజులు రమణ మహర్షి ఆశ్రమం లో ఉండేవారు కొంత కాలం.

Anxious to improve himself and climb up the ladder he visited the provincial capital Madras often taking part in Telugu plays staged at the Chennapuri Andhra Maha Sabha (CAMS). CAMS, a popular cultural Association of Andhras in Madras had been staging Telugu plays frequently with great success. CAMS then functioned - and still does - at the famous Victoria Public Hall, Park Town, Madras which was then a hive of Telugu cultural activity. Nagaiah was part of the scene and thanks to the association with that cultural unit he developed acquaintance with a well- to- do auditor with a flair for fine arts. These meetings he had would prove a turning point in his life later opening the doors for his entry into Cinema. The auditor with artistic ambitions was Bommireddi Narasimha Reddi destined to become one of the leading Indian filmmakers under his professional name B. N. Reddi. ఎచ్. ఎం. రెడ్డిగారు అప్పుడు చెన్నపురికి వచ్చి బి. ఎన్. రెడ్డిగారితో కలిసి Rohini పిచ్తురెస్ అని ప్రారంభించారు. దాని తోలి చిత్రం గృహలక్ష్మి (1938, a family melodrama built around traditional family values and their destruction by alcohol and extramarital relationships.) నాగయ్య ఎచ్.ఎం. రెడ్డిగారిని కలవాలని కాచుకొని ఉండగా బి. ఎన్. రెడ్డిగారిని అక్కడ కలిసి ఆశ్చర్య పోయారు. ఇలా నాగయ్య మళ్ళి సినిమాలోకి ప్రవేశం పొందారు. గృహలక్ష్మి లో ఒక చిన్న పాత్రం ఒక సమాజ సేవకుడిగా. The movie was a great hit.
ఆ తర్వాత వందే మాతరం అనే చిత్రం ౧౯౩౯ లో విడుదలైంది. ఇది కూడా బి. ఎన్. రెడ్డిగారిదే. అందులో నూ నాగయ్య పాత్ర వహించారు. తర్వాత ఎన్నో చిఇత్రాలు నాగయ్య్గారికి వచ్చింది. ముఖ్యంగా భక్త పోతన, త్యాగయ్య చాలా ప్రసిద్ధికెక్కింది. త్యాగయ్య లో ఆయన పాత్ర పోషణ శ్లాఘనీయం. త్యాగయ్య సినిమా గురించి చెప్పక నాగయ్య గారి చరిత్ర ఆపలేను.. అది నెక్స్ట్ పోస్ట్ లో.

భక్త పోతన చిత్రం లో నాగయ్య.

సన్నివేశం: పోతన రచించిన భాగవత గ్రంథాన్ని రాజు తనకు సమర్పించాలని చెప్పుంటాడు. ఆ సందర్భంలో విచారణకు పడిన పోతనకు సరస్వతి దేవి ప్రత్యక్షంగా వచ్చి తనను ఒక మానవ మాత్రునికి సమర్పణ చేస్తావా అని అడుగుతుంది. అప్పుడు పోతన భక్తీ వివేచన మేల్కొని తను శ్రీ రాముడికే అర్పిస్తాను అని చెప్పుతారు.

ఈ సన్నివేశం పోతానామత్యుని జీవితంలో ఒక విశిష్టమైన ఘట్టం. ఇది పోతన భాగవతం అమూల్యమైన గ్రంథం అనే విషయం నిరూపిస్తుంది.

సుమంగళి చిత్రంలో నాగయ్యగారి అభినయం చూసిన బాబురావ్ పటేల్ ఆయనను "The Indian Paul Muni" అని పిలిచారు. దీని గురించి మన సినిమా thread లో ప్రస్తావన చేద్దాం.
