The Book: The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

Who This Book Is For:

If you want a little nudge in the direction of positive thinking then this book is for you.

What to Expect:

The book gives wonderful insights in to overcoming worry, creating happiness, generating constant energy etc. And it also offers practical tips in overcoming life’s problems.

If for example, you feel defeated by any situation then the author advocates making a list of factors which are working for you and not against you. When you think of factors against you, they exert more pressure and make the situation too complicated.

The book also offers gems of statements, like ‘Attitude is more important than facts’, ‘Never take counsel of your fears’, etc.

If you are an atheist, then read the book with an open mind, as the book contains references to God and Bible.  It is important to understand the principles, and to concentrate on positive thinking in your life, which is what the book helps you to achieve.

The Book:   The Road Less Traveled by M Scott Peck

 Who This Book Is For:

If you wish to go to the crux of life’s problems be it in relationships, self understanding, or confronting problems, then this book is for you.

What to Expect:

The book opens with the statement, ‘Life is difficult, and so understand and accept it’. The author then gives you a basic set of tools to deal with life’s problems. The book encourages you to grow up, accept responsibility and take action.

The book is divided in to four sections, namely discipline, love, growth and religion and grace.

The first two sections make for a good read, while the last two sections may not be agreeable to everyone. The book has received a mixed bag of reviews, some positive, some critical and some of his beliefs are questionable.

My advice while reading the book is the book is heavy stuff, but it does give you some valuable insight in to relationships, self awareness, and helps you to distinguish between dependency and true love.
