This dance form originates from the NE state of Manipur. The Raslila, a favorite dance of Krishna with his milkmaids has a strong influence on this style of dance. Colorful costumes, lyrical, gentle and soft movements represent the core of Manipuri dance. Pung, pena, flute, drums are the important accompaniments for this dance.

 

 

Kathakali Kathakali & Mohiniattam, Kerala

Kathakali originated in the state of Kerala denotes the stylized form of dance-drama. It is noted for its distinct body movements, intricate gestures, bright make-up and sophisticated costume. A performance comprises of abstract movements and its coordination with rhythmic beats and musical notes depicting a total or part of a story. The story inspirations normally are from various episodes of Mahabharatha, while the modern performances also includes stories from Shakespeare, Bible, Julius Ceasar, King Lear and Iliad. Major Kathakali styles include Vetthathu Sampradayam, Kalladikkodan Sampradayam and Kaplingadu Sampradayam. Facial expressions, elaboreate makeup, music and the instruments are some of the important aspects of Kathakali.

odissi Odissi, Odisha

Originating from the state of Odisha, this dance portrays the spiritual motifs of India. This creative and devotional form of dance is graceful, sophisticated, expressive and sensual. This dance includes the Tandava and Lasya elements. Mahari, Nartaki, and Gotipua are the three main schools of Odissi dance tradition. Like other classical dances, costume, jewelry and music are some vital aspects of this type of dance.
