A friend of mine got fired recently. He was working in a good MNC. He did well in his first project which lasted for 1.5 years. After that project got over the HR people forced him to join a project of a different technology than what he was trained in. The technology in the new project was too advanced for him and too difficult for him to handle. Also, the work timings were 11-12 hrs per day and there was lot of travel. Due to tiredness he got burnt out and could not take time to learn technology properly. Also, lot of office politics happened as his seniors took a dislike to him.As a result he couldnt perform well and got bad reviews from senior management. he requested for some other project but by that time the HR called him and fired him with 2 weeks notice and a severance package.
As far as I know, he has not made any major mistakes or escalations and no problem with professional behaviour. main reasons to get fired are: not having aptitude for technology, office politics and cost cutting by company.
He is in lot of tension and is desperately looking for a job change. He got through an interview and cleared 1st round..
His queries are as follows:
1. If he gets job in another company, and if they do background check will they get to know that he was fired? He attended the HR interview and the HR asked him the reason for him leaving the company . he lied that he took a break and resigned due to health problems.
2. Will his future employers contact his ex-manager and ask him the feedback about him? If the manager wants to spoil his life and gives bad feedback will the offer be revoked?
3. Totally he has more than 3 yrs experience. He was on bench for a long time (almost 8 months) as there were no projects. Does he have to mention that if he attends any interview and if he is asked about work experience?
4. Will his future career be affected in any way just because he was fired from 1 company?
Anyone knows about this please reply.

I do not know exactly, have to ask him. But does it make a difference whether he was terminated or asked to resign? If yes, then how?

According to my knowledge if you are asked to resign that means you submit your resignation letter and the relieving letter will be normal relieving letter and can be treated as normal resignation . If company issues a termination letter , it will specify he was terminated from company , may provide some reason .

Most of the back ground check will be handled by hr , project managers are not contacted unless you give them as reference .

Bench period need not be mentioned but he will need to provide some activity during that period based on what he was doing ... Like internal projects or certifications Etc .

Since ir it is common knowledge now that companies hire and fire based on needs he can also say that there was no project for his skills in the company hence the parting .

i would say the firing will not impact his future . He needs to improve his technical skills, get some certification done and do the interview well . If you are good with your skill set it will not have any adverse effect even if you mention you were fired . The interviewers are looking for people with skills so if someone is good they won't let them go .

Answered your Q's to the best of my knowledge and experience. Hope it helps.

1. If he gets job in another company, and if they do background check will they get to know that he was fired? He attended the HR interview and the HR asked him the reason for him leaving the company . he lied that he took a break and resigned due to health problems.
If the previous company’s relieving letter only mentions “Acceptance of resignation” and the “Last working day” , then there is nothing to worry. Relieving letter is the most important and a mandatory document. And real reasons for quitting one’s job is never mentioned by the incumbent.

2. Will his future employers contact his ex-manager and ask him the feedback about him? If the manager wants to spoil his life and gives bad feedback will the offer be revoked?
In the application form of the new organization if your friend provides ex-Manager’s details for “Professional Reference” then yes he would be contacted. Generally 3 references are given, random checks can be made.
Manager’s feedback is treated as god’s word only in cases of internal deployment, when it’s external like I said reference checks could differ.

3. Totally he has more than 3 yrs experience. He was on bench for a long time (almost 8 months) as there were no projects. Does he have to mention that if he attends any interview and if he is asked about work experience?
It is better to mention that he was “On bench” , this can be a reason for “Looking for other opportunities” w.r.t “Health problems”, since it’s common knowledge no work is done during this time.

4. Will his future career be affected in any way just because he was fired from 1 company?
Honestly speaking NO. People survive in other organization irrespective of fake resumes, harassment cases, PIP etc. He needs to learn lessons from the current and work towards improvising his overall skills and knowledge. Work smartly.

As for politics, it's common and happens everywhere. Your friend will learn over time.

Regarding reason of firing in IT company, now a days all companies ask to learn new technologybased on demand and if their manager feels employee is not eager to learn they esacalte to HR. I am not sure of yor friends attitude but I had seen many freshers/ peope with less experience who doesn't want to learn new technology even they don't try.personally I have worked in around 4 tech before moving to management.
1. no, normally background check is done to ensure experience certificate is not fake. They verify year of experience , start and date of company and confirm there is no serius allegation on employee (like security violation).
2.Normally they do not reach out to previous manager. Current HR just reach to previous HR to cross verify experience (not sure on small companies). As a part of selection process, we reach out to HR only and outsource BG check to 3rd party. Only one thing is here to consider that experience mentioned in new company should be correct and HR of previous company should verify else offer can be revoked (WE had a case where one lady mentioned her experience as 3 year in prevvious company and when HR called her previous employer they said she worked there only for 2 years. However she was very good technically (I was her manager) but HR terminated (asked to resign) after one month of joining. We tried to save her as she was real good but per HR , this was case of 'code of conduct violation'

3. This is very comoon in IT companies for freshers . He can mention that he was attending training or learning his technology. If his exp letter says he has 3 yrs of work experience he shoud mention the same.

4. No, because no one will come to know he was fired until he had some serius allegation. Even if he was fired, his HR must had asked him to resign like norma resignation (if he was not rigid on resignation)

Makes a big difference. What exactly was written in the termination letter?
Lay off /resign/fired all these are very different terms . They also effect the length of term the employee is eligible for benefits even after the termination of employment. (atleast in the US )
Position elimination /cost cut etc are all pretty standard terms used in the industry and no one will bat an eye lid. Fired on the other hand is a strong word and not generally used in the letter but alluded to . This is very rarely done even if employee was indeed fired.
1. If he gets job in another company, and if they do background check will they get to know that he was fired? He attended the HR interview and the HR asked him the reason for him leaving the company . he lied that he took a break and resigned due to health problem .
Its safer to stick as close to the truth as possible. A simple ..company was going through cost cutting and I was impacted is enough in 99.99% of the cases.

2. Will his future employers contact his ex-manager and ask him the feedback about him? If the manager wants to spoil his life and gives bad feedback will the offer be
revoked?
ITs possible though not very probable . Ask ur friend to give references of his peers who knew him well.
3. Totally he has more than 3 yrs experience. He was on bench for a long time (almost 8 months) as there were no projects. Does he have to mention that if he attends any interviewand if he is asked about work experience?
he was employed the whole time . He was just not actively working on projects. This can happen to full time employees as well. Did he use the time in between projects to hone his skills..if yes then that can be used to his advantage.

4. Will his future career be affected in any way just because he was fired from 1 company?
Lay off any reason No
Fired for illegal /misdemeanor-possible.

Anyone knows about this please reply.
