Solution to Puzzle # 5655 S. A. Andree's Arctic Balloon Expedition of 1897 Salomon August Andree was a Swedish balloonist who proposed to pass over the North pole in a hydrogen balloon. The polar balloon Ornen ( The Eagle) lifted off from Svalbard in July 1897, carrying Andree, Knut Fraenkel the engineer and Nils Strindberg the photographer. The expedition was probably never meant to succeed. Shortly after lift off, Andree realized that the balloon had lost it's "drag rope" which was used to steer the craft. Two days later the balloon crashed on the Arctic ice pack. Ill equipped and ill clothed, the explorers tried to trek back, but the shifting ice and the severe weather condition left them stranded on Kvitoya (White Island). 33 years later their bodies were discovered by a group of seal hunters.
