Answer to Puzzle @ 5463 Mount Vesuvius Vesuvius was formed as a result of the collision of two tectonic plates, the African and the Eurasian. The former was subducted beneath the latter, deeper into the earth. As the water-saturated sediments of the oceanic African plate were pushed to hotter depths in the earth, the water boiled off and caused the melting point of the upper mantle to drop enough to create partial melting of the rocks. Because magma is less dense than the solid rock around it, it was pushed upward. Finding a weak place at the Earth's surface it broke through, producing the volcano. In 79 AD it erupted killing many people in the area. 1) Pliny the Younger is the eye witness to this eruption and he documented the destruction in a letter he wrote. 2) Tacitus is the historian to whom Pliny the Younger wrote the details of the destruction. 3) The actual picture of the Mount Vesuvius now with the city of Naples as of now. Unlike the AD 79, now city of Naples has 3 million population and any volcanic eruption that happens in the near future could cause catastrophic impact in loss of life and property. 4) The city of Pompeii that was built as a model city to create a new generation of intellectuals who can openly discuss their views in a forum. The whole city was destroyed in a few hours due to the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius. The ruins of Pompeii maintained to date brings those memories of people who lived in 79 AD. 5) 16,000 people died in the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius. 6) It is located in the neighborhood of Naples, Italy. During our 25th Wedding Anniversary celebration, my wife, my son and I had the privilege of visiting this site as part of our 12 day cruise in Carnival Freedom covering Rome, Naples, Dubrovnik, Venice, Cecily, Barcelona, Cannes and Florence (the beautiful Tuscany region). My son reached the peak of the Vesuvius through a winch but we stayed the last spot up to which the vehicle could go. Viswa
Pompeii... Reminds me of something I read on reddit, hope its okay to share.... In 1939, Italian archeologist Prof Maiuri, discovered an artifact in the ruins, an ivory statuette of Indian origin which survived the disaster and lasted all these 2000 years, identified as the Goddess Lakshmi and dated to around 1AD. It has since then been quoted as the ‘Goddess Lakshmi statue in Pompeii’ in many books & articles. Link Maddy's Ramblings: The Goddess at Pompeii (Attached pic below)
We didn't see it perhaps we missed it. But the most heart-breaking was mummified mortal remain of a small baby hugging the mother out of fear before death. Ash was filled 10 feet high in less than two hours and the only escape was towards the sea. They had a gate blocking entry and hence many perished.
Do you guys like cats? We had stray who liked to stay in our verandah in India. Selfish little critter. Used to eat 3 meals a day and disappear. Only time she stayed put was when she got pregnant, which was once every few months! I'm a dog girl. Grew up with labs and dobermans. Doggies are so loving!
