That was a good one @kaniths. Excavation + evolution + china led me to Peking man. Very interesting to learn about the Zhoukoudian caves and my response was Chicken bone hill where explorations was conducted by Andersson in 1918.

Why not?! It was a really good puzzle. By the time I got to it so many clues had been posted that I didn't see the point in adding a clue, but it was fun to solve.
