Verbal clue for #4692:“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” -- Unknown Aside from the obvious reference to trees, I wanted to convey the generous sentiment behind the love and hardwork that goes into the making and maintenance of these bridges. These root bridges take decades to build and grow. The people involved in constructing them do it with the spirit of paying-it-forward. Some of these bridges are over 500 years old. They have been maintained by successive generations for the benefit of those yet to come. What an incredible example of generosity! In a world struggling to accept responsibility for the devastation caused by our unbridled lust for resources, what better symbol of a harmonious existence with the environment, of protecting and nurturing our natural heritage. This too is India!
@Gauri03, I got it wrong. My message about the MP is to indicate my answer Meghwal and their craft. Apparently it is an incorrect answer. Incidentally, they are dissents of a Rishi Megh who can convert clouds into rain through his prayers. They are originally from Himachal Pradesh spread across four other states. Their craft work in costume and jewellery are extraordinary and world famous. They do excellent nose rings with previous stones. After all the top portion of the nose is called bridge. They are also excellent in their embroidery work. The combination of colors are derived from crushed insects. Their occupation includes weaving, agriculture and wood carving. They used to live in mud houses painted outside with excellent geometric designs and mirror works. Viswa
Ingenious correlation though a tad far fetched. :tongue With my puzzles, you must internalize the Occam's razor. "Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected." Given competing answers, the simpler, more direct one will always be the correct one. If you have to jump through hoops to connect an image to the answer, you are most likely on the wrong track. I try not to make puzzles with tenuous, thrice-removed connections. The links are always strong and obvious. In most cases the keyword is straight from the image itself, and can be discerned without any background research. I do throw in one or at most two images where a little bit of reading and lateral association will lead you to the clue.
Amazing puzzle Gauri. Did not get it although I knew about this bridge and had mentioned it in a story I wrote recently! Just could not connect the clues. :-( Neurons asleep.
Please identify the Indian person connected with the following images. Please not images 4a and 4b represents single clue or cluster.
Gauri, I got bamboo and bridge keywords. Went for vines for the banyan tree. Then went on a 'bamboo' detour including searching for that in Meghaduta text. : ) I misread the 'there are many, but looking for one of kind' statement as looking for a specific bamboo kind used in building suspension and other bridges, and did some in-depth study of different bamboo species, scientific names and common names (prior interest in these too). Would have got it if I wasn't a bit distracted when solving or if I had read the clues that followed from you and others, I think. Puzzle reminded of the puzzle that had Tirupati Laddoo and Santoor soap. On to Akanksha's puzzle..
