    Puzzle: Dancing women from Assam

    Answer: Joonbeel Mela

    What is Jonbeel?

Joonbeel Mela is a three-day community fair held the weekend of Magh Bihu (Mid-Jan) at a historic place known as Dayang Belguri at Joonbeel. It is 32 km from Guwahati. The Joonbeel (Joon and Beel are Assamese terms for the Moon and a wetland respectively) is so called because a large natural water body is shaped like a crescent moon.

What is so special about this festival?
It is the only fair/market in India where barter system prevails. Before the mela starts, Agni puja is performed. During the mela, the king of Tiwa tribes visits and collects taxes

How to interpret the narrative clues
What event is taking place around Jan in Assam in a market as trade/barter. Though each clue contributes to the answer only a unified narrative leads to the answer.

The Assam government has approached the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) for declaring the historic ‘Jonbeel Mela’ a heritage festival and a heritage site in Morigaon district.

    “Rarest of rare”

Mr. Kumar said the government had sought the special status as Jonbeel Mela was one of “the rarest of the rarest festivals” where both tribal people and non-tribal people of Assam and Meghalaya practice a barter system for exchanging agricultural produces in a festive manner at the end of the Assamese Magh Bihu period (Makara Sankranti).

I was tied up all day yesterday with meetings outside the office. Tomorrow, I have two lectures in the University and Sunday I have to speak in the spiritual center.

I notice that if I am not around for a few hours, the puzzle clues are everywhere. At this rate, it looks like I have to take the puzzles with me for every meeting. Someday, I will end up screaming that I solved it in the middle of the meeting.

It is time to bring a rule that JAG, Butterflyice, Satchi & Surekhap are allowed to attempt puzzles only 8 hours after everyone gets a chance to crack puzzles.

Perhaps, Rihana, Sandhya and Deepslike are resting after they handed over their assignment to JAG, Butterflyice and Surekhap.

Lyraa, are you listening? Is there a program to delay viewing of the puzzle by this gang of seven?surrendersmiley
