Not sure if I missed out the explanation in one of the "reversed" texts but on first thought why is Soka talking about "Deep Blue Something" Breakfast at Tiffany? Where did Tiffany come from? On Deeper thought , jeopardizing my wrought neurons further, buzzed the connection (just the connection, not your critical explanation though)

When Gauri started this thread exactly a month ago on July 23rd, I did not know the Ferra - ri -gamoes! I did not know rich history of Richard II, beautiful exposition on the blue dot, the cosmetic czarina emerging from the Gallic churning sea, I did not know anything beyond pioneering missions, binary numbers, five year plans were just five year plans, how to fit a round in a square, lovely ladies can be laced in puzzles.

Today I look back and chuckle at the intrigue that this thread has drilled into me. Am I notching up knowledge or information, does not matter, I'm more amazed at how wisdom has been imparted, to disseminate data is boring but to present dissectable data is interesting.

    Happy one month of quizzing!

And thank you for this wonderful thread. Sometimes wonder Soka, Gauri, Laks, Deeps, Roar, Sandhya, Priya who are these people in this peripheral cenacle of amusement and amazement, but one at a time, for now I cracked only one personality, Soka cannot be anyone but sssh not a word to anyone

Thank you , really heartfelt thanks to everyone, from how to frame a puzzle to how to entertaining weave a puzzle, long way I have learnt in 30 days, 40+ pages.

The enthusiasm in the thread may wane, the mileage of puzzles may ebb but surely this thread will be fondly remembered by me even years from now , talking to someone in Istanbul cafe chewing lahmacun, you know in the year 2014 I was part of this virtual community , atta people , there was a quiz thread, my brain used to be fried not fired up! and the puzzles were so , oh forget it you won't understand ...

Look forward to another month of smokey grilling of neurons.

Sorry that turned out to be an inside joke!

It was a nod to Gauri, our friendly neighborhood AI researcher & to the first puzzle in this thread. I was just pulling her leg.

"Deep Blue" was a chess-playing IBM computer, developed as an AI demo. It was a special purpose machine, designed only to play chess, by a kind of deep-search mechanism. It could evaluate the consequences of multiple moves and choose the best one. This was a brute-force approach, relying on depth of search, computing power and speed. The machine could not do much else. Deep Blue defeated Gary Kasparov in 1997.

"Watson", unveiled in 2011 as a "Jeopardy!"-playing computer is considered an advance over Deep Blue. It is capable of extracting semantic content from imprecisely worded input in natural language. It is now being developed as an expert system for medical diagnostics.

"Deep Thought" was a chess-playing precursor to Deep Blue from the 80s. Kasparov defeated Deep Thought.

Thank you Aria!! I thought I was the only one who noticed our thread-i-versary.

Soka as Sal Khan! :biggrin2: I read "meeting friends at the club" and I haven't been able to shake this image from my mind. ;)

I'm exhausted to type anything now! To expound on my reference, "Breakfast At Tiffany's" is a song recorded by American band "Deep Blue Something" in 1995.

Theme of the song as nicely elaborated by wiki -

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" is sung from the point of view of a man who is on the verge of breaking up with his girlfriend on the basis that the two have nothing in common. Desperate to find something, the man brings up the Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast at Tiffany's, and his girlfriend recalls that they "both kinda liked it." He argues that this should serve as enough motivation for them to work out their problems based on the notion that love will always find a way to make things work."

Easy to see the connection , Deeper is the unofficial name of the super-computer developed after Deep Blue to challenge Kasparov and officially launched as just Deep Blue again.

How could I not notice with this convoluted navigation these days! Jumping 4 forums and 5 links to arrive at this thread, routed to home page of "E&D" forum by some autobot, and the thread on the top, been counting the days since 3 days and scouring for birthday cakes since 2 days

"What made you want to look up bien-pensant? Please tell us where you read or heard it (including the quote, if possible)."
