    Om Shri Sainathaya Namah!

    Dear Sai sisters,

I'm blessed to have this opportunity to contribute to -

    UNDERSTANDING SAISATCHARITRA PARAYAN 2,WEEK 10 .

The questions are from Chapter 36.

    1) Why did Baba demand Dakshina from one gentleman and refuse it when another devotee offered much more on his own without asking?

    2) What is the reason Baba gives for accepting/asking for Dakshina from devotees?

3)A true devotee and Baba are one and the same. What a true devotee says on His behalf, cannot be differentiated from what Baba Himself would say.Baba is within me,as I’m within Him.

Do you agree with my above statements? How is this demonstrated in this chapter by Shama?

I hope my questions are clear. Please let me know if there is any confusion.
Thank you Baba .Thank you,Saisakthi sister, for giving me this great opportunity.

    Jai Sai Ram!

    Dearest Racr sister,
Double Congrats on getting nominated for 2 weeks :)
Here are my answers to your queries on chapter 36. Please check and let me know.

    1) Why did Baba demand Dakshina from one gentleman and refuse it when another devotee offered much more on his own without asking?
BABA accepts or asks for Dakshina only from people who have pending debts. BABA says that MasjidMayi calls for Debt and the donor has to pay it and get free.

In this story, one of the gentlemen from Goa had took a vow that he'll pay his first month's salary (Rs.15) if he get the job. He got the job and also got promotions in future. However he forget about his initial Vow. The force of Karma drove him to Shirdi and BABA asked for that money (Rs.15) and made him free.
However the other gentleman did not have any debts and hence BABA did not accept his dakshina.

    2) What is the reason Baba gives for accepting/asking for Dakshina from devotees?
BABA take nothing from anybody. It is only we (human beings) do all these dealings with God for our sake and we sometimes forget about the deal once our wishes are fulfilled. BABA ensures that he reminds us about this and accepts Dakshina only to make us debt free.

3)A true devotee and Baba are one and the same. What a true devotee says on His behalf, cannot be differentiated from what Baba Himself would say.Baba is within me,as I’m within Him.

Do you agree with my above statements? How is this demonstrated in this chapter by Shama?
I second you on this thought. Shama is definitely a very blessed soul who had opportunity to be very near and dear to BABA. I've no words to express the level of initimacy between BABA and Shama.
In this story, Shama literally fought with BABA pleading for the gift (Child) for Mrs. Sakharam Aurangabadkar. BABA finally told that the lady will have it after 12 months. Shama was so confident that BABA words will definitely come true and promised the lady that in 12 months she is going to deliver the baby and if that is not happening, he would change his name and also send BABA out of Masjid.
These words shows the true devotion of Shama and his faith towards BABA. And yes indeed, BABA's words turned true and the lady delivered a beautiful son in a year's time.

    Regards,
    Viji

    Dear Racr sister,

    sairam

I tried my best to answer the questions - here is my replies.

    1) Why did Baba demand Dakshina from one gentleman and refuse it when
another devotee offered much more on his own without asking?

When two gentlemen from Goa had visited Shirdi, Baba takes Dakshina from one person by demanding and refuses to take from another person even though he is giving voluntarily. This is because only the persons who are in debt are being asked to pay the Dakshina. Baba says that HE takes nothing from anybody. The Masjidmai calls for the debt, the donar pays it and becomes free’.

    2) What is the reason Baba gives for accepting/asking for Dakshina from
    devotees?

Baba is accepting or demanding Dakshina from the devotees only to free them from the old debt
which they have vowed for and forgotten to fulfil the same.

    3) A true devotee and Baba are one and the same. What a true devotee says
on His behalf, cannot be differentiated from what Baba Himself would say.
Baba is within me, as I’m within Him.

Do you agree with my above statements? How is this demonstrated in this
    chapter by Shama?

Yes. Shama has helped Mrs. Aurangabadkar who was issueless to
be blessed by the Sai. He has fought with BABA pleading him to bless her with a child. Finally Baba yielded and said “ she will have an issue within 12 months”. Then Shama turned to the lady and said, “ Dear Lady, you are a witness to my words. If within 12 months you do not get any issue, I will break a coconut against this Deva’s head and drive him out of this Masjid. If I fail in this I will not call myself Madhav. You will soon realise what I say.” Yes, within a year Mrs. Aurangabadkar had a son and visited Shirdi prostrated themselves before BABA and donated a sum of Rs. 500/- Thus Shama was great soul who had faith and affection in Sai and blessed to be near and dear to BABA.

    1) Why did Baba demand Dakshina from one gentleman and refuse it when another devotee offered much more on his own without asking?

Dakshina is not demanded from all. BABA does not ask all to give money. It is for those whose to clear their debt.

In this story, the Dakshina incident is as follows:-

Once two gentlemen came from Goa for taking darshan of Sai Baba, and prostrated themselves before him. Though both came together, Baba asked only one of them to give Him Rs.15/- as Dakshina which was paid willingly. The other man voluntarily offered Rs. 35/-. This sum was rejected by Baba to the astonishment of all. He explained the reason to Shama as narrated below:

The characteristic of the person to whom Dakshina was asked for:
As first he was poor and took a vow to his God that he would pay his first month's salary if he got an appointment. He got one on Rs.15/- p.m. Then he steadily got promotions, from Rs.15/- he got Rs. 30, 60, 100, 200 and ultimately Rs.700/- per month. But in his prosperity he forgot clean the vow he took. The force of his karma has driven him here and I asked that amount (Rs.15/-) from him as Dakshina.

    2) What is the reason Baba gives for accepting/asking for Dakshina from devotees?

Baba never, in fact, actually begged any money, nor allowed His Bhaktas to beg. He regarded money as a danger or bar to spiritual progress and did not allow His Bhaktas to fall into its clutches.

Dakshina is collected for freeing humans from their debts. It is even reminded by BABA himself to people who have forgotten to do / fulfill their prayers.

    3) A true devotee and Baba are one and the same. What a true devotee says on His behalf, cannot be differentiated from what Baba Himself would say.Baba is within me, as I’m within Him.

Do you agree with my above statements? How is this demonstrated in this chapter by Shama?

    Yes. The statement is correct.

Mrs. Aurangabadkar’s incident is an example for this statement.
Shama beckoned to the lady. She came up, bowed and presented the cocoa-nut and joss-sticks. Baba shook the cocoa-nut which was dry. The Kernal within rolled and made a noise. Baba said, "Shama, this is rolling, see what it says". Shama, "The woman prays that a child might be similarly rolling and quickening in the womb. So give her the cocoa-nut with Your blessings".

Baba, "Will the coconut give her any issue? How people are foolish and fancy such things!"

Shama, "I know the power of Your word and blessing. Your word will give her a string or series of children. You are wrangling and not giving real blessing".

The parley went on for a while. Baba repeatedly ordering to break the coconut and Shama pleading for the gift of the unbroken fruit to the lady. Finally Baba yielded and said, "She will have an issue". "When?" asked Shama. "In 12 months" was the reply. The cocoa-nut was therefore broken into two part, one was eaten by the two, the other was given to the lady.

The Shama turned up to the lady and said, "Dear madam, you are a witness to my words. If within 12 months you do not get any issue, I will break a cocoa-nut against this Deva's head and drive him out of this Masjid. If I fail in this, I will not call myself Madhav. You will soon realize what I say".

She delivered a son in one year's time and the son was brought to Baba in his fifth month. Both husband and wife, prostrated themselves before Baba and the grateful father (Mr. Aurangabadkar) paid a sum of Rs.500/- which was spent in constructing a shed for Baba's house "Shyamakarna".

    UNDERSTANDING SAISATCHARITRA PARAYAN 2,WEEK 10 .

    Dear Racr,
Glad to join this week's satsang

    1) Why did Baba demand Dakshina from one gentleman and refuse it when another devotee offered much more on his own without asking?

Baba demands dakshina to one person who had once made a vow to his God that he would pay his first month salary after getting his job while he was poor. He got his job and had promotions and a steady rise in salary too. He forgot to pay his vow. His karma has brought him to Shirdi. Baba asked the person's first month salary in the form of dakshina.
But, Baba refused the dakshina from the other person.

    2) What is the reason Baba gives for accepting/asking for Dakshina from devotees?

Devotees who have made a vow and are in debt to God, but have forgotten it due to some reasons, Baba reminds them and asks their devotees in the form of dakshina. It is the Godess of Masjid (Masjidmayi) who calls for debt and the devotees pays it and becomes free.

3)A true devotee and Baba are one and the same. What a true devotee says on His behalf, cannot be differentiated from what Baba Himself would say.Baba is within me,as I’m within Him.

Do you agree with my above statements? How is this demonstrated in this chapter by Shama?

I do completely agree with above words. Faith and patience are essentials of Sairam's teachings to his devotees. One among the blessed souls who followed this was Shama. He was very confident that Baba will bless Mrs. Aurangabadkar with kid within a year.
As Baba says, "My abode is in your heart and I am within you. Always worship Me, Who is seated in your heart, as well as, in the hearts of all beings', Blessed and fortunate, indeed, is he who knows Me thus". Hence Shama's faith and thoughts came true.

    May Sairam guide us always.
    Om Sai Ram.
