My dear Priya !

Just a suggestion - since Rohit is too young, you chant these shlokas & tape in a casette. Play them repeatedly when he is awake - he will learn them easily over time. That was what I did at home.
Even now when I go to any Subrahmanyaswami temple, I get only " skandaya... " first - it is so deeply ingrained in my mind !

Daily Shlokas from Morning to Night

Dear Friends,
I am giving a set of simple shlokas, which are normally chanted from the time one wakes up, to the time one goes to bed. I am giving one shloka for each deity.
After getting the Feed Backs from you, I will post a PDF version, without the meanings, so that you can take a print out, laminate & keep in the puja room.
This is my simple, useful gift to my dear IL ites wishing them & their families a very happy, healthy & prosperous 2007.

Part 1

1 -As soon as you wake up, first chant HarirHarih 7 times.

2 - Next hold both your palms before your eyes and chant

Karagrae Vasate Lakshmi Karmadhyae Saraswati
Karmulae Tu Govindah Prabhaatae Karadarshanam

Lakshmi resides in the front of the hands, Saraswathi in the middle. Parvathi dwells in the base. At dawn, I perform the darshan of my hands. May the day, therefore, dawn to me, bringing all prosperities.

3 - Before you step on to the ground, chant this to seek pardon from Bhoomi Daevi for stepping foot on the ground.

Samudra vasanae daevi parvatha sthana mandithae
Vishnu pathni namasthubyam paada sparsham kshamasvamae


Oh, Bhoomi Daevi, You are clothed by the oceans and the circumferences of the mountains adorn and beautify you. Oh, consort of Lord VishNu, I make obeisance to you. I mat be pardened for my feet tread on Mother Earth.!

4 - Chant either A or B before taking bath:

A - Govinda Sthuthi;

Govindaethi sadaa snaanam govindaethi sadaa japam
Govindaethi sadaa dhyaanam sadaa Govinda keerthanam

While taking bath, always remember the name of Lord Govinda. Always chant Govinda’s name. Meditate upon Govinda always and sing Govinda’s praise always.

OR

B - Gangaeycha Yamunaeychaiva godhavari saraswathi
Narmadaey sindhuh kaveri Jale (a)smin sannidhim kuru

Oh, the rivers Ganga, Yamuns, Godavari, Saraswathi, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, all of you, please gather together in this water.

5 - When lighting the lamp, the following may be chanted:

deepo jyotih param brahma deepo jyotih janaardhanaha
deepo harathu me paapam sandhyaa deepo namo(a)stutae

The radiance of the lamp is the form of Supreme Brahman. The radiance of the lamp is the form of Lord Janardhana. May the radiance of the lamps destroy my sins. I bow down in obeisance to you, in the dusk.

6 - If you are in a hurry, chant this minimum, everyday:

Thvamaeva maathaa cha pithaa thvamaeva
Thvamaeva banduhscha sakhaa thvamaeva
Thvamaeva vidyaa draviNam thvamaeva
Thvamaeva sarvam mama daevadaeva

You are my mother; you are my father.
You are my relative; you are my friend.
You give me knowledge; you give me prosperity.
You are everything to me, my God of the Gods !

7 - If you can spend more time chant the following:

Guru:

DakshiNamurthy:

Om namah praNavaarththaya s(h)uddha jnaanaika moorthayae
Nirmalaaya pras(h)aanthaaya dakshinamoorthayae namah

He is the very meaning of the primordial pranavva “ aum” and He is the embodiment of the purest form of knowledge. He is pure, totally calm and serene, I offer my obeisance to the supreme Lord Dakshinamurthy.

OR

Hayagriva:

Jnaanandamayam daevam nirmalaspatikaakr(u)thim
Aadhaaram sarva bhoothaanaam Hayagreevamupasmahae

I offer my worship to Lord Hayagriva, who is the foundation of all knowledge, who possesses a body that is very pure like the purest of crystals and who is the store house of Jnana or the supreme form of knowledge.

8 - Vinayaka

Agajaanana padmaarkam gajaananam aharnis(h)am
Anaekadantham bhakthaanaam aekadantham upaasmahae


I offer my worship to that Lord Ganesha , day and night, who gives extreme happiness by which the lotus like face of Parvati, the daughter of Mountains, blossoms forth, like the lotus that would bloom by the sight of the Sun; my worship be to that God who possesses the face of an elephant with a single ivory horn, who bestows enormous boons to His devotees.

9 - Saraswathi:

Brahmasvaroopaa paramaa jyothiroopaa sanaathanee
Sarvavidhyaadhi daevee yaa thasyai vaaNyai namo namah

Oh, mother, Thou art the personification of Brahman. Thou art the supreme Spirit, the Light Divine, the eternal being. Thou art the presiding deity of al branches of learning.Salutations to thee, Oh Goddess of Speech !

11 - Devi:

Salutation to you, Oh Devi, who is the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, who is the consort of Lord Shiva, who is the means of accomplishing all desires, who is the refuge of all, who is three-eyed and who is the fair-complexioned one.

Shlokas for Meenakshi, Kamakshi, Bhuvanes(h)wari & other deoties, I will post separately. The above is a quick common shloka.

12 – Shiva:

S(h)ambhum daevam sakalajagathaam ees(h)varam tham thrinaethram
Gowreenaatham sukhadavaradam chandrachoodam bhajaami

I offer my worship to Lord Shambu, who wears moon on his head; who protects all the worlds; who is the three-eyed Lord . I offer my worship to the consort of Gowri; to him, who is the bestower of comforts, bestower of boons.

13 - S(h)iva-Parvathi:

Namah s(h)ivaabhyaam nava yowvanaabhyaam

Paraspars slishta vapurdharaabhyaam
Nagaendrakanyaa vrushakaethanaabhyaam
Namo namah s(h)anlarapaarvatheebhyaam

I pray to Lord Shiva and His consort, a very young maide; I pray to the form of Ardhanari, with the-mutually embraced or oneness of bodies of the lord and His consort; I pray to the daughter of the great mountain and the
Lord who bears the banner with a bull on it; I pray again and again the Lord Shankara and is consort Parvathi.

14 - Vishnu:

Namassamastha bhoothaanam aadibhoothaaya bhoobhruthae
Anaekarooparoopaaya vishNavae prabhavishNavae

Salutation to Lord Vishnu who is the creator of all human beings, the sustainer of the creation, whose form is all forms, who is all pervasive, and who is self-effulgent.

I salute KrishNa, the Lord, the teacher of the world, son of Vasudaeva, destroyer of Kamsa and ChaNura and the greatest joy of Daevaki.

16 - Hanuman:

Manojavam maruthathulyavaegam

Jithaendriyam buddhimathaam varishtam
Vaathaathmajam vaanarayoothamukhyam
S(h)ree aama dootham s(h)irasaa namaami

Bowing my head, I salute Hanuman, who travels as fast as the mind and the wind, who has mastered his sense organs, who is best among the intelligent, who is the son of the deity of wind, who is the commander-in-chief of the army of vanara tribe and who is the envoy of S(h)ree Rama.

17 - S(h)aasthaa:

Lokaveeram mahaapoojyam sarvarakshaakaram vibhum
Parvatheehrudayaanandam s(h)aastharam praNamaamyaham


He is the mightiest of warriors; He is greatly adored; He protects every being; He is supreme; He causes happiness to Parvathi. I offer my salutations to that great Lord Shasta.

18 - Thulasi:
Tulasi s(h)ree sakhi s(h)ubhae paapahaariNim puNyadae
Namasthae naradanuthae namo naraayaNa priyae

Oh, Tulasi, you are the friend of Devi Lakshmi. You are pure. You destroy all sins. You give luck, auspiciousness and merit. I pray to you, the one praised by the sage Narada and who ( Tulasi) is the favourite of NarayaNa.

19 - Rama:

S(h)ree ramachandraas(h)ritha paarijaathah
SamasthakalyaaNa guNaabhiraamah

Seetha mukhaamboruha chanchareeka
Nirantharam mangaLamaathanothu

We cherish always, for all auspiciousness to us, and approach the fragrant Lord Ramachandra who is the embodiment of all superlative qualities that are very pleasant; the one who gives happiness to the lotus-eyed Seetha.

20 - SubrahmaNya:

Mayooradhiroodam mahaavaakya goodam
Manoharidaeham mahachchiththa gaeham
Mahee daevadaevam mahaavaedabhaavam
Mahaadaevabaalam bhajae lokapaalam

I worship
the child of Mahadaeva, the protector of the worlf, mounted on the peacock, who is hidden in the Upanishads, possessed of beautiful body, who lives in the minds of the enlightened, the Lord of the learned and the import of the Vedas.

21 - Navagraham:

Aarogyam pradadaathu no dinakarah chandroyas(h)o nirmalam
Bhoothim bhoomisuthah sudhaams(h)uthanayah prajnaam gururgowravam
Kaanyah komaLavaagvilaasamathulam mando mukham sarvadaa
Raahurbhalam virodhas(h)amanam kaethuh kulasyonnitham


We pray to Surya for health, Chandra for virtuous fame, Angarakan for prosperity, Budhan for intelligence, Brahaspathi for good reputation, Shukra for unparalleled, good ability for conversation, Sannes(h)varan for permanent happiness, Rahu for good physique and ability to destroy enemies and Kethu for progeny.

22 - Before food:

AnnapurNaa sthothram;

AnnapoorNae sadaapoorNae s(h)Ankara praaNa vallabhae
Jnaana vairagya siddhyartham bikshaam daehi cha parvathi

Oh, mother AnnapurNa ! You are whole & complete forever. Oh, Parvathi, consort of Lord Shankara, I solicit you for alms, for the sake of attaining liberation and for warding off the desires & passions of worldly thoughts.

Bikshaam daehi kr(u)paavalambanakaree maathaa(a)nnapoorNaes(h)varee


Mother Annapurani, you are the embodiment of grace. Pleae give me food.

23 - At bed-time:

Glory unto Thee, Oh Thou Lord beneficient, Thou God of gods, Thou ocean of mercy.

24 - Yanmae manasaa vaachaa karmaNaa vaa dushkrutha krutham
Thanna indro varuNo bruhaspathih savithaa cha punanthu punah punah

Whatever sins have been committed by me, by thought, word or deed, may the Supreme Lord, the source of strength, wisdom and purity, forgive me and cleanse me of them all.
