Try out the age-old grandma remedy for Constipation -- the simple, easily available castor oil !! My granny used to give us children a customary karandi of castor oil, every fortnight, during oil bath time. Excellent results --- 'smooth' sailing all the way [IMG] ......

Even now, whenever my 4 yr. old daughter has this problem, esp. when she eats difficult foods like rajma, channa, popcorn also -- I simply mix just one tsp. of castor oil in her curd rice, paruppu rasam, etc. ; the kid won't know any difference in taste, and no more bloated tummy, tightness etc.

    Hope this suggestion helps out,

Jeera Kashaya m - Specially during Pregnancy.

After the second semester in pregnancy, this kashayam is taken everyday first thing in the morning. This eases the system completely & eliminates all general vague pains. This is a very effective diuretic as well. Usually, when the labour pain starts, this kashayam is given. If it is false pain, this kashayam will help it subside. If it is regular labour pain, it will start intensifying.

    Jeera - 2 tsp

    Water - 2 cups

Panangkalkandu - 1 tbsp ( if not available, add sugar)

Butter - 1 tiny knob ( if not available add little ghee)

In a dry kadai roast jeera till nearly black.

Add 2 cus of water & boil on a medium fire.

When it reduces to 1 cup add panangkalkandu.

As soon as it dissolves, remove & add butter.

Drink it as hot as you can.

Only 30 mts later, one can have coffee or anyother drink.

Even outside pregnancy, this is an excellent kashayam to give relief from vague stomach pains & helps urination.

    Have you tried pitted prunes?

    Hi Selvi & Sumok,

Though your question on remedies for constipation is to Chitvish, I thought of giving this suggestions.

Have you tried giving pitted prunes for those suffering with constipation? Prunes are dried preserved plums. I saw you gals are living in the US, so you can get it in Sam's club or Costco. Sunsweet Gold Label brand comes in a packet.

Dried plums are also very nutritious rich in antioxidants, potassium, B vitamins, vitamin K and dietary fiber. They also have carbohydrate along with dietary fiber and can be a good choice in the diabetic meal plan.

Sumok, you can make your kid easily take 4 to 5 dried plums a day to get her off constipation issues. It is good for children too.

    Lots of Love,
    Rathi

    Home Remedies

    Hi Ladies,

I am new to this forum, I am enjoying reading Mrs. Chitra's and other's recipe contributions. The description of the recipes is so wonderful, that I start craving for the dishes once I start reading them and I get hungry.

For constipation for adults - try swallowing 4 tsp of methi seeds early morning on empty stomach with one full glass of water.. I hear this is very good for relieving constipation, reducing blood sugar and cholesterol and regulates periods for those having irregular ones by balancing the hormones.

    Hello Avanti !

    Welcome to our beautiful forum.
I have been taking methi seeds with 1 cup of water first thing in the morning for years now. The maximum you can take is 1 tsp - 4 tsp is impossible ! I have heard that it helps control blood sugar, but did'nt know it relieves constipation !
Some prefer to soak it in water in the night & swallow it first thing in the morning. That I also I find difficult, because the volume just swells up & to swallow that becomes quite a job ! Anyway thanks for the suggestion.
    Love & regards,
    Chithra.
