Thank you for this excellent post. After working in the software industry for several years, I had decided to work on my own in 2001 and my choice was to work from home. Last 11 years, I am working from home without any problem. As you pointed out rightly, there were some initial hick-ups and once I was able to overcome those difficulties, it became a simple business to execute. I am at present an investment banker working from home in the US. I have a dedicated room, computer, telephone, printer, fax, etc.. My commute is to walk down to that room at 6 a.m. in the morning with a cup of bournvita. I work in slots and my productive time is from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. I break only for lunch in between and again for like 15 minutes to take my mind off from work pressure sometime in the afternoon. I work up to 6 p.m. every day. After sometime, the clients came without any marketing effort and through referrals.
The positives are a) flexible time, b) no commute, c) focus in the known setting, d) no peer pressure and e) lunch accessible instantly.
The negatives are a) interruptions, b) looking up emails throughout the day, c) clients accessing at anytime over phone and d) technological issues and office supplies to be managed directly by us.
